Chapter History

1992.  The Montana Chapter of FNAWS was organized on May 9, 1992 and is affiliated with the national organization foundation for North American Wild Sheep (FNAWS). The founding members were all sheep enthusiasts from around the state of Montana and with a donation from the Montana Outfitters and Guides Association, the chapter had some funding and its beginnings.

2008.  In 2008, the National Foundation for North American Wild Sheep (FNAWS) changed and shortened their name to the Wild Sheep Foundation.

2009.  To keep continuity and simplicity the Montana Chapter also changed its name in 2009 to Montana Wild Sheep Foundation (MWSF).

2014.  In 2014 the MTWSF board wanted to try to increase our membership and member value by increasing our brand awareness.   Member Levi Bowler donated his talents to create a new logo that is more easily replicated on merchandise and all media.  In order to increase our life membership base the board decided to create an annual “Life Member” drawing for a sheep hunt.  The move was an instant success and increased our life memberships by over 30%.

2017.  The next step to increase member value and awareness was to upgrade our website.  In fall of 2017, we upgraded our website.  This website is intended to improve connectivity of members and make it easier to see the conservation progress of the Montana chapter.  The website upgrade is also intended to increase member and non-member education about wild sheep issues and chapter projects.  The website will be a work in progress and the MTWSF board welcomes your involvement on the website committee to strive for continued improvement.  Please contact us if you have any questions or innovative ideas to share.

Chapter Structure

The Montana Chapter of Wild Sheep Foundation is a 501c(3) non-profit organization of an all volunteer membership. The chapter is governed by a board of directors made up of respected, conservation-minded individuals of all walks of life, elected by the membership for three year terms. Officers are elected each year serving one year terms. They include a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Several project committees are also part of this structure and are headed by appointed directors or members. The chapter also has an executive director.

The Montana Chapter shares the same Mission Statement as National WSF – to enhance and promote the state sheep herd populations and to safeguard against the decline and extinction of the species. Additionally, the chapter is committed to assist in funding various projects for professional management of these sheep populations throughout the state of Montana as well as sheep populations in all of North America. Essential projects involving conservation, habitat, management improvement and sheep population and propagation are actively funded by the MWSF.

I wanted to send you both a thank you for this opportunity to hunt sheep.  I am on my way home. Mike Litzen is a great guy and runs an excellent outfit.  I had a great time and was fortunate enough to harvest an awesome ram.  Thank you both again and the Montana wild sheep foundation.
Let me know anything I can do to help,
Thanks again.
